Carbon Emissions
Carbon emissions as relevant to the exhibition were calculated using transportation of materials, artworks, and persons as needed for the show.
Energy usage of the space will be calculated and accounted for at year end as part an institutional audit.
Material life cycle assessments were forgone as they were increasingly speculative, work intensive, and not comprehensive. Instead, the Carbon Conscious Contribution was applied to each artwork, regardless of material composition as this seemed to be the most appropriate solution as well as an immoderate estimate for each artworks actual carbon cost.
The tracking of material orders was input by the artist's studio into a form created by the gallery. This was done for all materials used by the studio in the months leading up to the exhibition.
Shipping tracking was provided by the Boesky registrar team, it was noted if this shipper made internal, warehouse stops outside of the pick-up and terminus.
Flights were minimal for this exhibition as only the artist traveled solo and the rest of the team either contributed remotely or was based in New York.
The figures were calculated using the Gallery Climate Coalition Carbon Calculator and were third party verified by Art to Acres.

Waste Report
The exhibition had waste to landfill. ✓
Waste, admittedly, was not prioritized or properly tracked for this exhibition. However, the overall waste of the exhibition did not increase for this show as compared to our regular waste production. There was no construction or large materials waste for the project and the opening events were virtual considering COVID-19 protocols.
This exhibition was the first to be executed with a climate action lens as Marianne Boesky Gallery and the area of waste management can and will be improved upon in the future.

CCC methodology:
“We at Marianne Boesky Gallery have expanded and prioritized our commitment to sustainability since the formation of the Green Initiative Committee in 2019. In addition to ongoing environmentally friendly practices in consultation with Galleries Commit, the gallery will ask purchasing clients for a *carbon-conscious contribution (CCC) of $35 to Art for Acres per artwork sold in addition to the retail. Artworks accrue and will continue to accrue carbon footprints in their making and transport, but the *CCC will conserve 100 acres of land and protect 7 tCO2 of stored carbon on Earth—this effort abates the carbon footprint for each artwork’s lifetime of existence.”

“Aligning with Hamilton’s interest in environmental justice, A Romance of Paradise will be the first carbon-conscious exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery. The gallery has expanded and prioritized its commitment to sustainability since the formation of its Green Initiative Committee in 2019. In addition to ongoing environmentally friendly practices with Galleries Commit, A Romance of Paradise will track carbon output throughout the planning and execution of the individual artworks and the exhibition as a whole and will account for carbon conservation in the cost of each work. At the end of the show, the gallery will make a donation, including for any unsold works, to permanent, old-growth forest conservation with Galleries Commit x Art to Acres.”
